Year 5 News

 

 It's been another busy week in Year 5. 

 

We've finished our defeating the monster stories and the children have chosen their favourites to add to a class book.  We've now started a new unit on information texts.  This was inspired when Larry the lizard escaped from his cage...

 

 

 

We looked everywhere and he was eventually found by Mrs Holmes, keeping warm by the photocopier.  The children have brought home a text map about the "Tongo Lizard" which they should have a go at reading so that they are familiar with the text when we get back to school next week.

 

This week's shining star was Roxanne who did a great job of building a flashback into her story.  There were special mentions for Laura, Corey, Frankie and Lilly for their flashback stories and for Brooke and Jakub for completing their moon diaries.  Brooke also got her special mention for being the only person in Key Stage 2 to achieve a Mathletics certificate last week.  She brought the Mathletics trophy to the class for her efforts. 

 

 

I think there might be some competition from the other classes for who wins the trophy after half term so get playing on Mathletics everyone and I hope to see a few certificates on the 24th.  There is a homework task set which focusses on short multiplication.  This will help the children with our long multiplication when we return to school after half term.

 

This week's spellings focus on the words that break the rule "i before e except after c".  There are some on Spelling Shed to practice but you might come across some others as you read.  Keep reading every day Year 5!

There won't be any swimming on the first day back.  Children won't need their swimming kits but will still need to have their PE kits in school every day.

Year 5 Library Reminder

For those children who checked out books during our library visit, they will be due back today!  If you are enjoying them, you can renew them at the library, on the phone or via the website.  Or alternatively, they can be returned to any Derbyshire library.

Year 5 News

Wow! This week seems to have been a really busy one and we've had some very hardworking children. 

 

First of all, did you hear that we won the attendance award this week?  Well done to all the children who helped us by coming to school every day.  Let's aim for another star next week.

 

Our week started out with a penalty shoot out with Mansfield Town.  The children had lots of fun.  Here are a few action shots to remind you that sponsor money is due in next week. 

 

 

On Tuesday we had our last drumming lesson before the concert next week.  Spread the word that everyone is invited to watch our skills on Tuesday at 11:20am.

 

We learnt some French greetings earlier in the week.  The children enjoyed this so much that they asked if they could have a go at home too.  Follow this link to find a game where the children can listen to some French greetings and try to match them to the English words.

You might have seen us in the playground on Thursday completing a science investigation.  We studied the length and direction of shadows throughout the day and how the sun appeared to move through the sky.  We have written up our findings today and drawn a graph to show the pattern we noticed.  We'll continue learning about this next week.  Please return any moon diaries that the children have been filling in so that we can look at these too.

 

 

 

Today we have enjoyed Number Day by using lots of maths skills to take part in "Who Wants to be a Mathionaire?"  Thanks for the donations that were sent in which will go to the NSPCC.  Homework this week focusses on area of rectangles.  Children need to remember the formula - length x width - to help them answer the questions.  Next week we'll move on to our next unit which is all about multiplication and division.  I hope everyone gets on TTRS to polish their times tables knowledge.

 

Well done to this week's super spellers: Corey, Caleb, Riley, Finlee, Demi-Jo, Archie, Alfie, Kira, Krzysztof, Ryan and Bray all scored full marks.  Next week's spellings are a tricky set!  They are challenge words which all Year 5children have to work on and should be using in their writing.  Again, there is no rule and they are words that we just need to practice, practice, practice.  They are all on Spelling Shed to help.

 

And all week we have been writing, writing, writing!  Our classroom has been full of monsters but luckily they have all been defeated!  We have one more defeating the monster story to write on Monday and I'm really looking forward to reading what the children write.  I have not been disappointed this week - let's hope Monday's writing brings a smile to my face too!  We even plan to make a book of our best stories.  Missy was the star of the week for her shared write earlier in the week, with special mentions for Amber, Bray and Finlee. 

Year 5 News

Well we've enjoyed our week of being transition class and sitting on the benches in assembly.  Well done Year 5 for showing everyone how to walk around school in the correct way.  I wonder if we've done enough to win it for next week too.

 

We had some very enthusiastic mathematicians taking part in our TTRS competition.  Jamaine, Frankie and Krzysztof enjoyed the disco with their friends and the other winners.  Well done to everyone who practiced and who has worked hard to improve their speed and accuracy.  Just because the competition is over, doesn't mean that time on TTRS should stop!  We'd love for all of our children to become rockstars and answer multiplication and division questions in under 3 seconds.

 

We're whizzing through our maths unit on perimeter and area and will soon be moving on to another multiplication and division unit.  These will all need children to be spot on with their times tables so keep on practicing on TTRS.  This week's homework is to calculate the perimeter of some shapes.  Four children have completed their homework already - well done!

 

We had a whopping 14 children who got full marks on their spelling test this week.  The next set of spellings have silent letters too.  It's difficult as there is no rule to follow - you just have to know!  There are games on Spelling Shed as usual but you can also follow this link to find some more games with a greater range of words - https://www.spellzone.com/unit22/page2.cfm. 

 

We've taken a break from our science work on space to look at forces, in particular gravity.  We had fun this week measuring gravity using force meters.  Next week, we'll be back to learning a bit more about the Earth, sun and moon.  Earlier in the term, children bought home a moon diary and were asked to record how the moon changes over time.  I hope lots of the children have been doing this.  If not, there is still time as we have over a week before I'd like the children to bring their sheets back to school.  I wonder if anyone has spotted a pattern?

 

 

Year 5 TTRS Battle

The battle is on Year 5.  There's a battle between girls and boys.  You have until 6pm on Sunday to battle it out and be victorious!

Remember, all points you earn in the battle will go towards your overall score on Thursday when we judge the competition.

Time Tables Rock Stars Competition

Have you heard the news?  It's time for a TTRS competition!

• It is for children in Year s 1-6.
• All children can come to school dressed as a rock star on 31.1.2020
• There will be a Rock Stars disco on 31.1.2020 for the children from each class who are

Can we be the best school in the area?  (At the moment, we are 16th on the leader board.  Scarcliffe top the table with Langwith Bassett, Whaley Thorns and Park Federation all ahead of us!)

Year 5 Robotics Day

I hope the children have filled you in on our exciting electronics day!

We programmed robots, made electronic circuits and designed our own inventions for the future.  Thanks to Charlotte from Learn By Design for delivering a fun packed day of new skills and experiences.
