Year 2 News...

This week has been a fantastic start to the new term for year 2. All the children have come back quite refreshed and worked their socks off! Well done, Mrs Elliott, Miss Honeybun and I are very proud of you all. Let's see if we can keep it up throughout the term...
This week in English has been very exciting! On Monday many objects, pictures, posters and sets of information were left in our classroom. We didn't know what they were, who they belonged to or why they were there. But it was out job to find out. We worked collaboratively as a class to piece together information we knew for sure and information we thought we knew.

Then on Tuesday we had a visitor come to year 2, Zooloo the Alien...she gave us extra information to use to piece together what was going on. We gathered our thoughts by creating and acrostic poem collecting the information we had gathered so far this week. Some children chose to write about Zooloo, considering her feelings and interests too. By Wednesday the children were deep in thought and were beginning to ask questions. What did the alien look like? What did she move like? What did she behave like? So on Wednesday we created a character description for an alien we had each individually designed. The children worked extremely hard using: non-negotiable, noun noun phrases and adverbs in their work. As the week progressed we didn't think it could get anymore exciting... but guess what? This morning Year 2 received a TOP SECRET mission from Speenard the Minister of Spaceology. We had to help him so that he didn't get fired from his job!

Speenard sent us these photographs that were taken from his space station as well as sending us a letter. The letter asked for our help to explain to him all the information we knew about the pictures he had sent. The children were really into the tasks and produced some lovely letters back to Speenard.
Well done to you all! I wonder what next week in English will bring?

This week, in Maths we have been looking at sorting 2D shapes by their properties in Carroll diagrams. We have also been learning to double numbers and place numbers on to landmark lines by estimating their positions and have also begun comparing numbers using < , >, = signs. So this week has been very busy and the children have done worked hard to keep up with the pace of learning as the concepts of the learning this week have been tricky. We will keep revisiting these  areas throughout the year to build the children's confidence further, especially when positioning numbers on a landmark line by estimating.

This week our certificate winner is Junior!

This week he has been a little superstar! He has been so keen to learn and produced some great pieces of work this week throughout his learning. But this week it was his character description of his imaginary alien that stood out. He thought creatively and wrote creatively to produce a lovely piece of work - well done!

Also in this weeks Pride Assembly we had two more children to bee extremely proud of. Once again River-Lea was a reading raffle winner, along with Alix from year 2. Well done for reading every night/ morning at home to be put into the weekly raffle. Keep up the hard work both of you! I am going to set  year 2 a challenge... lately we have been struggling to get many readers in the raffle for reading all week. So I challenge the class to work together to see if we can get half the class 13 children in the reading raffle next week. You will be rewarded with PRIDE POINTS! Challenge on!

Today homework has been set for Maths and English, your child should have it in their homework books, book bags or on a piece of paper (if they didn't bring in their book bags.) I have asked for the homework to be brought back by Thursday next week, in time for me to mark it and set more for next week. Also your child has a set of new spelling to learn for their spelling test on Tuesday. As well as keeping up the effort to read regularly at home.

I really appreciate all the support given at home by parents/carers and family members who take their time to get involved with their children's learning. Believe me it really does help and is evident!

Many thanks,
Miss Kerry, Mrs Elliott and Miss Honeybun :)
