Year 5 News

With some of the class off enjoying themselves at Bushcraft, we had to miss our swimming session this week.  But that didn't stop us getting active.  We had an extra PE slot with Mr Andrews where we practiced our ball skills and got outside to play some invasion games.  We played more invasion games on Friday, sharpening our skills and offering advice to improve the game.

Unfortunately, whilst getting changed, one of the children has lost a plimsoll and a pair of shorts.  We have had a look at school but could you all double check your child's PE kit to see if they have brought home any extra shoes or shorts so that we can return them to the correct owner!  Thank you.

This week's certificate winner was McKenzie who produced a very specific plan for his writing.  We have begun our discussion on whether National Service should be brought back and will finish this next week.  What do you think?  In Maths, we have been telling the time using 12 hour and 24 hour clock.  The children have worked hard to make progress in this and we will keep dropping in opportunities to tell the time and calculate how much time has passed.  It would be great if you could ask your children questions at home too.  You could ask them what time it is now, what time a TV show starts, how long it's on for, etc.  The children have some time word problems to solve for homework.  Remind them to use the frog method as they work out the answers.  All children should start at question number one.  If the questions are challenging, they should persevere for the first few but some children should attempt all of the questions.  There is also an activity on capital letters which we started at school on Friday.  Don't worry if you were at Bushcraft and missed the homework - I have a spare for you!  We had the most pieces of homework returned on time this week but it's still no where near enough.  Let's see if we can break the record next week.

We had six super spellers this week - Gracie, Oskar, Molly, Eric, Sonny and Blake.  Well done.  Who will be next week?

Have you heard about the Hallowe'en disco?  There has been a competition to design the poster and Grace won the prize for Key Stage 2.  Look out for the posters with her design and all the details you will need to know.
