Year 5 News

First of all, well done to this week's certificate winner Olivia.  She has been working with greater independence - a useful skill for all of us.  Keep it up Olivia.  Pride assembly also saw Peyton as one of the winners of the reading raffle.

She had her reading book and reading diary in school everyday last week (as she always does!) and had had her diary signed to say she had read at home everyday.  This is what we all need to do so keep reading Year 5.  We check reading diaries for these signatures every day so please help your child make sure they have their book and their diary and that it has been signed by the adult they have read with.  Hopefully we'll have some more reading raffle winners soon.  It's great that some of you are using the reading diaries to let us know how your child is getting on at home too.  We have loved reading the comments about how your child is enjoying the challenge of bringing home a book from a different colour band.

I have had lots of reply slips back for our parent teacher interviews next week.  If you haven't sent yours back yet, please do so ASAP so that I can make you an appointment for Tuesday or Wednesday evening.  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you properly and talking about how your child has begun the new school year.

Children should also have brought home letters about Bikeability and swimming this week.  Please return the reply slips.  Out first swimming lesson is on Wednesday so please return the slip by then.  If we don't have the signed permission slips, your child will not be able to join us for swimming!

Homework this week involves spelling of plurals.  We have spent some time in class discussing this and reminding the children that they never need to use apostrophes when spelling plurals!  We have also discussed some irregular plurals such as mice (not mouses) and sheep (not sheeps).  For maths, we have been multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.  The children have some problems to solve.  Everyone should have a go at the first part with the second part being more difficult.  Some children have also chosen to bring home an extra piece of homework so I look forward to finding out who has helped Inspector Carmel.  Last week we only had 15 children who returned their homework so we definitely need more this week.

Well done to Eric and Stan - our super spellers of the week.  They both scored 11 out of 11 in our spelling test on Friday.  New spellings will be coming home on Monday so please encourage your child to learn these spellings and write sentences with them in their spelling sentences book.  I wonder how many super spellers we will get next week.
