Year 2 Update

First of all thank you to all the parents and carers that borrowed school 'booster seats' to transport the children involved in the Key stage 1 dance to the Dance festival on Friday afternoon. The children, parents and staff had a great time :)

Secondly... HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! to all the Year 2 Mums. On Friday everyone made a card for their Mummies. Mrs Elliott and I just hope that the children remembered to give them to you! We really hope you liked your card and they made each and everyone of you smile. Enjoy your special day!

This week the children have had a very busy week, as usual, they have worked extremely hard and have been a pleasure to teach this week. Mrs Elliott and I are very proud of what a sensible and hardworking class you are. Keep it up!

This week in English we have been writing our own versions of traditional tales together. Our traditional tales are following the same structure, as a well known tale, called Hansel and Gretel. But we have put our own spin on the tale by changing the characters and setting. The children have come up with some very creative ideas this week. I am looking forward to reading the traditional tales they produce independently next week.

In the words of one of our children we have been doing 'big children's Maths' this week. Our focuses have been on fractions, doubling and halving. This week the children have been learning ways to solve doubling and halving problems by 'x 2 and dividing by 2.' We will continue more of this next week too.

Have the children told you  we are learning about the Great Fire of London?
We have created a timeline of the historic event. Also this week we listened to a radio clip of Isabelle, a young girl, who witnessed the fire happening. We have stepped into her shoes and used our senses to understand what it would have been like during The Great Fire of London. Next week we plan to use our knowledge and understanding of the event to write a Diary entry by Isabelle. Keep a look out for the final outcomes.

Thursday was World Book Day, we had a fantastic time in Year 2! The children's costumes were fantastic! A big thank you to parents and carers for supporting us making the day a success. We began the day with a morning WBD word search activity, had a celebration WBD assembly - where each class were given the opportunity to share their costumes, following that Year 2 went to Miss Richardson, in Year 4, to share stories. In the afternoon, Miss Donohoe planned some lovely WBD activities with the class around the traditional tale Cinderella. :)
Take a look at the WBD costumes!

This week our certificate winner was well deserved by Tillie.

In the classroom Tillie always works hard and tries her best, but this week she received the certificate for making fantastic contributions during our History activities.
Well done Tillie, keep up the hard work!

Also Year 2 had a reading raffle winner this week.

Kayden has been a reading superstar by reading every night this week. He was one of the six  children to make it in the reading raffle this week. I hope next week we can build on this number :)

On Friday year 2 children brought home a reading comprehension activity. Please work through this activity with your child/ children to ensure they are prepared for their SATs.

See you next week,
Miss Kerry and Mrs Elliott :)
