Year 5 News

What a lot we have to tell you!  First of all though, I have gone and left the memory card at school so you will have to wait for next week for some photos to be shared!

Before half term we started a sewing project.  The children chose a constellation and used it to make a star gazing cushion.  They have sewed all their stars on and are now stitching the front and back of the cushion together using a blanket stitch.  They are loving the challenge and I'm impressed with the attitude they all have.  They often choose to sew during golden time!

You might have seen us in the playground on the last day before the holiday.  We were measuring the length of shadows and looking at how they change through the day.  You could ask your child if they could explain this to you.  They could always look for a similar pattern at home, although I believe that the recent sunny spell may have left us for the time being.

We've had lots of sporting opportunities recently.  We've had training sessions for football and for tag rugby as well as our usual PE lessons.  The children love these experiences so please make sure they always have their PE kit in school so that they don't miss anything!

In Friday's assembly, special mentions were given to Boyd, Oskar and Neil for their work in PE and this week's certificate winner was Sebastian.  He has a great attitude to learning when he's at home and always completes homework tasks.  Many children completed a line in our book bingo task and some even made a full house!  It was good to see a few more children complete their spelling sentences this week too.  We had seven super spellers this week - Gracie, Oskar, Grace, Eric, Tear, Stan and Julia.

This week's homework is to have a go on Mathletics.  We introduced the children to this on Friday and they should have their login details in the reading diaries.  They have already set up their avatar and started playing the games.  I've had a quick look and at the moment, Tear has completed 5 of our "Learn" games with 86-100% accuracy.  Amelia is close on her tail with 4 games complete to the same accuracy level.  Can anyone overtake them by Wednesday?  The children loved their first play on Friday so I hope they find more fun games over the weekend.

The children have also asked for a new Abacus game.  Log on to play "Get the Yeti"!  And don't forget, you can keep collecting coins on Times Tables Rock Stars.

Apologies to the parents who I let down by cancelling your parent teacher interviews.  I will try to speak to you all next week to rearrange your appointments.

And keep an eye out for the photos when I put them on!
