Year 5 News

Well we've had a short but busy week!

Well done to our super spellers this week - Gracie, Oskar, Molly, Grace, Kian, Eric, Tear, Blake, Ellie, McKenzie and Lily.  You can see your child's score in their reading diary, along with next week's spellings which will now be given out on Fridays.  If your child didn't have their diary, they have used a piece of paper but should really have their reading diary in school every day.  If their diary is lost or stolen, please talk to us about this so that it can be replaced.

Thanks also to those children who did their homework over the holidays.  This week's homework focuses on subtracting using a frog number line for maths and using relative pronouns for English.  Please encourage your child to complete this ready to be returned on Wednesday.  If they have any problems, they can ask me about it on Monday or Tuesday.

Our 100% attenders for the last half term received part of their treat yesterday and will have an extra playtime to enjoy next week - fingers crossed for a sunny afternoon for them!  I wonder how many children will get 100% attendance this half term - it's only 18 days long!  At the moment, 27 children are on track.

This week we've been writing stories.  I've had a busy morning reading them all and I have to say I have enjoyed myself!  Ask your child what their story was about - they had some great ideas.

We have also enjoyed using Scratch to write algorithms to control a character on the screen.  Tear has downloaded this onto her computer at home and has enjoyed learning what else it can do.  The program is free to download and has created much excitement in the classroom this week.

Have you heard that another Times Tables Rock Stars competition is up and running?  The children have until Thursday to score as many points as possible and to speed up their time.  On Friday they can come to school dressed as Rock Stars and the winners will be invited to the winners' disco on Friday afternoon.  There will be awards for the fastest player, the most frequent player and the player who has knocked the most amount of time off their current score.  There will also be a prize for the class with the most points so come on Year 5, give it all you've got to be the best rock stars in school!  At the moment, Lily is the only person going to the disco from our class as she is the only one with any points since the competition was launched yesterday.  Who can beat her??

On a serious note, we have talked about how many usernames and passwords the children have got.  As adults, we know how important it is to keep information like this safe.  Please help your child to keep their passwords safe too.  If they feel that someone else might know their password, please speak to us so that we can change the passwords and keep their accounts safe.

Enjoy the long weekend and we will see you all on Tuesday!
