Year 5 News

The children have got back into the swing of things and started the new year with lots of hard work.  They are really enjoying our new science topic focussing on space.  I wonder if anyone will be able to see the lunar eclipse this evening; I hope the weather is on our side!  So far we have learnt the names and order of the planets in our solar system and the children have researched some of the planets to create some lovely fact files.  Next week we will focus more on how the Earth, the Sun and the Moon all move in relation to each other.  The children will be bringing a moon diary home next week.  We ask that they look for the moon each evening and record what they see on the sheet.  They should return the sheet when it is complete after a month.  We can then link this to our learning on the moon.

Did you hear about the events in out classroom on Tuesday?  Something happened while we were at drumming so we had a team of investigators on the job trying to figure it all out.

We had a lot of theories including dragons, knights, Romans and pirates.  This has inspired our new writing unit - look out for a text map coming home next week.

This week, we've also done lots of work on factors.  The children have worked really hard to find factors of numbers and they now have the opportunity to complete a Mathletics task which will allow them to practice.  They might also want to complete the prime numbers activity!  Factors are much easier to find if children know their times tables so encourage your children to get practising on Times Tables Rock Stars.  I've set up a GIRLS V BOYS battle.  Last time the boys won so come on girls!

And don't forget Spelling Shed.  Look how many children got full marks on today's spelling test!

Some children have really put a lot of effort in and have achieved their best scores yet so keep up the practicing!

Well done to our shining star and special mentions along with two children who won the reading raffle.  How many children will be entered next week?  You've got to be in it to win it so read, read, read this weekend and into next week.
